A blog for me…
What is a blog by the way? Here is my understanding of it; a blog is something that you write in order to display your feelings and just to write for the heck of it. So that is what I’m doing now. Writing. Isn’t that nice?
Well I just finished reading the ninth PENDRAGON book, called Ravens Rise. Actually that might be wrong, but since I don’t have the book here with me I’ll just go with it. With this book D. J. Machale is firmly established his position as my favorite author. And why not? I love his books and well… do I really need anything else? Ok then I’ll say this. I normally don’t ever read the preface of a novel. Wow big surprise. I just found that when I looked at them they were really boring and all they ever did was thank people for helping them.
Now don’t get me wrong, they need to thank everyone that helped. I mean sure you might be the author but without everyone else you would have nothing else but a bunch of words that would make absolutely no sense. Thank God for editors. That reminds me, I need to get one. Ok so now was I?
Oh that’s right. I was talking about how boring the prefaces of book were. Well I was wrong. I started reading them on the forth book and well I tell you they were not boring. Sure D. J. Machale thanked all the people who helped him but it was fun to read. And that is what I think books are all about.
Fun.
Yep that’s right; I think books are all about the fun of it. As an author in the making, I’ve realized something very important. If I ever get my book finished and then finally published and then onto the shelves of your bookstore, I want who ever picks up my book to have fun. I want them to rack their brains trying to figure out what happens on the next page, what plot twists will happen, and then I want them to be totally surprised by what they find. Then I want them hungering for more.
I sound pretty greedy right? But I think that books have the power to influence people. To either brighten their day or turn on the fossit in the waterworks which are people’s emotions. All in all, I want readers to enjoy reading my work as much as I enjoy writing it.
What? He enjoys writing? Isn’t that like you know… work? To tell you the truth, it a heck of allot more work then it seems. And to show you what I mean I’ll tell you a little about the writing process. Here goes nothing.
One day you say to yourself, I feel like writing a story. Now here is a question, what are you going to write about? Well? Once you get those old rusted gears working in that egg shaped thing we like to call a head or a human skull, you think of an idea. Now a problem comes to you when you think of this idea, will people like it? Is it even original? Or is it going to totally suck. Moat likely it will be all three of those things.
‘What the heck are you saying?’
Well to tell you the truth, (cough) there are billions of people on this planet and some of them are bound to not like it. So get over it. Is your idea original? Of course not, everything is just a build off of everything else. So as long as Jim wrote ‘Sally went to school” and you don’t do ‘Sally went to school’ everything will be fine. Just add your imagination to what you right, because that no one can duplicate.
‘I have a great idea so why will it totally suck?’
Because no matter you had in your head, when you put it down on paper (or word document what ever comes first) its not going to come out the way think it will. I just won’t flow the way you thought it should or would.
I’m not saying that you can’t write like that at all, but what I’m saying is that it is really hard to. Up till now I did that. Come on, I got a high IQ, school comes easy to me, and well I never really had a challenge. I learned to read at four, passed second grade in first grade but was never aloud to skip, so why can’t this be just like before. If it happens like that then bravo! I tip my cap to you. Wait, since I don’t wear one I can’t do that, so instead I’ll tip my pen to you.
Bye the way… all that stuff I said up there. You know on the page right above this one. Was true, about… well me. But even with such a great start I can’t and won’t write like that. Well I do that for my school papers (once I spend all week avoiding them). So... whatever suits your tastes feel free to do.
Now it seems I lost my place… again. Oh I just have to look up right? (Looks up and sees what he wrote) Well I was talking about the writing process. What comes next is probably the most fun part. Creating a world.
That’s right, you create a world filled with people, animals, plants, culture, and life. Some worlds will be just like this one, but others… that is where the true dreams lie. Lie is a world of the unknown. A world that is unlike any other. A world that is just waiting to be explored. Ok so now I sound like one of those old science teachers who are telling their middle school students all about the exciting wonders of chemistry. But you know what. Perhaps that’s not so bad. People need to explore their minds and put their imagination into action.
Now that you have done this there really is only one step left. And that is to actually write the story. Yep you have to write it. So… what are you waiting for? I can’t tell you how to do that. I can’t tell you how to do any of it. All I can do is point the way. And hope that you find your right path.
My last words of advice; follow your dreams. And never, ever, ever give up.
